NEW There will be no classes on Thursday, Nov 20, Tuesday, Nov 25, and Tuesday, Dec 2. As you can see from the syllabus, because of having each class 85 minutes long, we have material for 3 classes left: Thursday, Nov 13 (virtual members and code bloat), Tuesday, Nov 18 (multiple inheritance), and Thursday, Dec 4 (traits/teaching evaluation).

The Sun Java Development Kit (SDK) for Windows can be downloaded from http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.4.2/download.html.
In order to make the NetBeans-compiled applets run in MS IExplorer you need to also install the Sun plugin http://www.java.com/en/index.jsp.

This course is intended for graduate students. Programming languages that are useful are introduced. The course will cover the three computing languages C, Java, and C++, each of which will be allocated one third of the semester. As homeworks, small programs will be written by the students to practice the learned concepts. (There are no examinations, and the programs are the sole parameter used to determine the course grade. Three of four working programs will get you an A.) Modern program development techniques will be explained. An emphasis is put on program reuse (from existing libraries, for example) and on creating "glue" between existing applications like web browsers and math systems.

In Fall 1998, Fall 1999, Fall 2000, and Fall 2002 a similar course was given. The amount material covered in class is still quite large. On demand, I will cover less material at a slower pace, so that students with limited programming experience can benefit from it.
We have agreed on a meeting time. Class will be held Tuesdays and Thursdays, 2:35mp-4pm, in HA 342.
The windows version of the gnu software is found at www.mingw.org. But you can also install a Linux-like environment in Windows; see www.cygwin.com.
I have rebooted picard, and it should work again (Oct 14, 5:45pm).
