I will be in China until August 20. Dmitriy Morozov will be teaching the class on Tuesday, August 20. I will cover the syllabus and all course organizational matters on August 22.
The course web site taught in Fall 2001 and Fall 1999 contain old homeworks and mid-semester exams.
Please put your homework into my mailbox in HA 245 before 5pm.
Homework 1 is posted; due Friday, Sep 6, 5pm.
Here is the Maple 6 worksheet that demonstrates matrices. Note that you can load it by selecting "Maple text" and load it as Maple text. Then run it via edit->execute->worksheet. Lines that you type in are marked by "> ".
Homework 2 is posted (including problem 3 [with an explanation]); due Monday, Sep 16, 9am.
Exam is Thursday, Sep 19, during class. The exam is closed book, but you can bring one 8.5 by 11 inches sheet of paper with notes on both sides. I have posted the solution to the first exam in Fall 2001. Unfortunately, my answer to 3b was incorrect; it is fixed (thanks, Nick).

I have put copies of the two textbooks (see syllabus) on reserve in the library. Apportionment and the Alabama paradox can be found in Tannenbaum and Arnold, Chapter 4.
There are extra office hours tomorrow, Oct 9, 1:30pm-2:30pm.

Please email me your time you wish to give your presentation on Thursday. See the syllabus for possible time slots. I will schedule you in the nearest available one. Please indicate if the 3pm-5pm period is not possible due to an exam. Everybody is invited to attend any of the talks.
All talks are in HA 263.
Your term paper is due Thursday, Dec 12, 16h59, in my mailbox in HA 245. The paper (3-5 single-spaced pages) should describe the main ideas in the material you have read. You can add a critique (from "ingenious" to "boring"), but the critique should have some justification.
