I am taking the course over from Professor A. Helminck.
I will be away on Thursday, Aug 19, at a conference where I give an invited talk. Ms. Wen-Shin Lee will substitute for me in class.
Please be reminded that the only way to add this class is through TRACS - and TRACS will be open in the math department until 5:00 pm on Monday, August 30.
The first homework assignment is complete.
Problem 3.b in Homework 1 is not correct as it was stated. One of the vertices must be on level 0, the other on level 3. I have corrected the write-up (EK, Aug 30, 12:10).
Due to hurricane Floyd, tomorrow's exam is postponed and the class is cancelled. The projected exam date is Tuesday, Sep 21, during class. I wish that all of you weather the storm safely.

The second mid-semester exam is on Thursday, Nov 4.
Topics: expression trees, parse trees, linearization of trees by parenthesized infix expressions and prefix expressions, depth-first-search trees, graph orientability, fractals, L-systems, chromatic number, degree, and maximal clique of a graph, graph planarity (Kuratowski theorem).
Excluded topics: cryptosystems, zero-knowledge proofs, propositional calculus of Boolean formulas.
The exam is closed-book/notes, but you may bring to sheets of paper (8.5 by 11 inches) that have notes written on both sides.

I will be out-of-town next week. If you need help on Homework 5, I have extra office hours today (Friday, Nov 12), 15h00-16h30.
I have put the book by Tannenbaum and Arnold on reserve in the Hill library. Any chapter whose subject was not covered in class can be chosen as the topic for the term paper.
You must declare what you read by Fri, Nov 19. If you read a paper and not any of the chapters in the two books, please provide a paper copy to me.
Wen-shin has extended (and I have approved) the deadline for Homework 5 until tomorrow, Nov 23, 17h00.
The course's student evaluations will be done on Tue, Nov 30, in class.
